Finnish Dance: Christ Church Lutheran

Saturday, March 12--A Celebration of Viola Turpeinen
Supper, Lecture, and Dance

An evening about “the accordion princess” Viola Turpeinen—her life, her musical legacy, her Finn Hall dances.

5:30 p.m., Informal supper—to share memories and connections with Viola T.
7 p.m., Lecture, Carl Rahkonen, music librarian and professor
8:30 p.m., Dance, music by Finn Hall
Christ Church Lutheran, 3244 34th Ave. S., Minneapolis
$ 10 each for lecture and dance—or $15 for both
$5 informal supper (please RSVP)

Viola Turpeinen's accordion music filled summer nights in the dance halls of Finnish America from the 1920s to the '50s. Carl Rahkonen has documented Viola Turpeinen’s legacy, not only as a beloved Finnish-American musician, but also as a trained, professional musician who played a wide variety of music. He is traveling this year as Finlandia Foundation's Lecturer of the Year, presenting programs on the Finnish-American musical journey.

As Performers of the Year 2010, the Finn Hall band has played many of the halls throughout Finnish America that Viola Turpeinen played, and they continue to engage audiences of all ages in the dance hall tradition.

For info, to RSVP for supper, and to send personal memories of Viola Turpeinen, contact norgard@winternet.com or 651-786-5988.

Co-sponsored by Finlandia Foundation-Twin Cities and Finnish-American Cultural Activities (FACA).
